Let’s see, weeds sprout, just like nation’s spending
Let’s see now, I think we are now fighting 10 different kinds of noxious weeds here in South Ruby Valley, maybe more.
There is Scotch thistle, musk thistle and Canadian thistle — there is bur-dock, co*ckle bur and leafy spurge. And, too, we have tall whitetop and knapweed, plus a good amount of curly dock. And, of course, we must not forget forget Dyers woad and chickaree.
That’s 11 different species of noxious weeds — that I’m aware of — and gaining ground every year, one year after another.
And along with that, we have a good amount of government lands surrounding us. There is the Forest Service — they don’t seem to be taking care of their weeds. And the BLM — I don’t think they are doing much. Then there’s the good folks that are managing the Ruby Lake Wildlife Refuge and the Nevada Department of Wildlife, controlling their lands on Franklin Lake. I don’t think there is much future there.
Looks to me like we are going for TWC (Total Weed Coverage) by 2035 possibly. But that’s alright — we are a democracy, right — government by the people. Everything is going to be OK — right. We Americans — we are all for small government, right. That’s what we are for.
It’s kind of like wildfires — we’ll let government to take the lead — they’ll throw a lot of money at it. Never mind that the fires are getting larger and larger year by year — or that we have a huge national debt that some might be worried about. But not me — It’s ok. We’ll ignore that.
And what about the total size of government these days. Didn’t I hear someone say something about the federal government owning something like 85% to 90% of all the land in Nevada now? Yet they don’t seem to have enough — buying more and more lands every day. Maybe it’s a good thing — I don’t know. I certainly don’t hear anyone complaining.
Yes sir, we sure do have full-blown democracy going on in the country these days. But we won’t talk about what the founders had to say about democracies — always deteriorating into full-blown socialism, and what socialism ends up doing for a country. No sir, none of us are going to talk about that. After all, isn’t a good dose of socialism good for the country now and then — a million dollars spent here and a billion there — it keeps us all spending.
It helps the economy — keeps all of us from getting stressed out and helps us get ahead from one year to the next, right. That can’t be all bad.
Forget about all that talk about over-spending leading to the demise of our great country someday.
That’s for others to worry about, right.
Yes sir, I sure do like the way the country is going — particularly here in South Ruby Valley. Maybe I’ll get to liking all the weeds each of us are going to be dealing with in the future. And all those government programs and moneys we are all receiving these days. That’s got to be a good thing, too, right? Besides, if we get into trouble, we can always sell out to the government, right.
What do you think? I’d like to hear from you.
PS. And what about the old guy in the White House? Is he at fault for everything — or is he and others of his ilk more a reflection of what we the American people have become?
Cliff Gardner,
Ruby Valley
