The Elko County Sheriffs and Elko City Police Departments used to provide Category I peace officer training in makeshift classrooms. Under the terms of the merger, the departments will provide instructors and the college will provide the classroom space, teaching tools and administrative services for the course.

Roger Ike is just one of many artists who will if i kjtiuiv, display and seii their work at the annuai Tndian Arts and Crafts Fair scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 9 at the Elko Colony Arts and Crafts Building. Native American craftspeople from throughout Nevada will be selling buckskin items, beadwork, artwork, jewelry and Native American foods.

Tanya Balaam is a William Kelly Golden $1,000 award recipient and the daughter of Bruce and Ellen Balaam of Yerington. The 1994 graduate of Yerington High is a sophom*ore student at UNR majoring in pre-veterinary medicine. While in high school she was active in both FFA and 4-H and other activities and at UNR she is a member of the Collegiate Cattlewomen, Aggie Club and Alpha Zeta.

Jessen Mortensen, the Cox-Herndon Memorial $500 awardee, is the son of Joe and Cindy Mortensen of Wadsworth and a 1995 graduate of Fernley High. He is both a member of FFA and 4-H, and in high school participated in three sports and was a member of the academically talented program. He is a freshman at UNR majoring in hydrology'. WTiite Pine County recipients are Bellander and McKay. Jessica Bel-lander, a recipient of a William Kelly Golden Memorial $500 award, is the daughter of Terry and Linda Bellander of Ely and a sophom*ore student at UNR majoring in pre-veterinary medicine.

She is a 1994 graduate of White Pine County High, was a member of FFA and 4-H, high school golf and volley ball teams and an honor student. At UNR she is a member of the Collegiate Cattlewomen and the Aggie Club. Miranda McKay is a William Kelly Golden $1,000 award recipient and a sophom*ore at Utah State University majoring in agribusiness. She is the daughter of Robert and Karla McKay of McGill, and a 1994 graduate of White Pine County High. She was active in both FFA and 4-H, and a high school honor student.

Other Nevada counties represented among recipients are Humboldt, Clark and Nye. There are two awardees from out-of-state. Cody Bengoa, a William Kelly Golden $1,000 award winner, is a 1995 graduate of Lowery High in Winnemucca and currently a freshman majoring in biochemistry at UNR. He is the son of Cleto and Sandra Bengoa of Winnemucca, was a member of 4-H and in high school was in the honor society, student government and student oriented community activities. A recipient of a NAF $500 award, Tiffany Casclo of Henderson in Clark County is a junior student at UNR majoring in pre-veterinary medicine.

She is a 1993 graduate of Green Valley High in Henderson and a daughter of Dave and Linda Casclo of Henderson. She is involved in band at UNR and community activities. Michelle Bogoger, recipient of a William Kelly Golden $500 Memorial Scholarship, is the daughter of Barbara Bogoger of Tonopah and a 1993 graduate of Tonopah High. She is currently a sophom*ore student at UNR majoring in environmental resource Sciences. In high school she was an honor student, and a participant in other school activities.

Melinda Sandstrom, an Arvin Boerlin $250 award recipient, and Julie Work, recipient of the James Rolph III $500 Scholarship, are both from out-of-state but not by much. Sandstrom, a junior student at UNR majoring in animal science, is from Cedarville, Calif. She is the daughter of Ken and Mary Alice Sandstrom, and a 1992 graduate of Surprise Valley High in Cedarville. At UNR she is a member of the Collegiate Cattlewomen and Aggie Club. A sophom*ore at UNR majoring in animal science, Work is a 1994 graduate of Portola High School and the daughter of John and Trisha Work of Portola.

While in high school she participated in band, was an honor student, and an academic award winner in math and science. When Harrod's department store in London installed their first escalators in the early 1900s, they kept a large supply of brandy on hand for any of their customers who felt faint after the ride. Helping open the door to higher education for 14 young people are educational scholarships and grants provided recently by the Nevada Agricultural Foundation (NAF). The awards go to students wishing to pursue agriculture, or an associated field, as a career. A total of $8,750 was awarded earlier this fali to the selected recipients for the 1995-96 academic year.

Most recipients are attending the University of Nevada, Reno although some have chosen other institutions. "The dollar amount of awards given this year as well as number of recipients is among the highest NAF has had in its 18 year existence," said Dr. Dewayne Gilbert, NAF executive secretary. We're pleased at being able to expand our educational assistance for 1995-96." NAF President A.L. "Tony" Les-perance of Elko stressed that "while National interest in agriculture appears low, the product of success, abundance and affluence, its importance to each of us remains as high as it has ever been.

We need to encourage bright and capable young people to enter the agricultural field and hope our scholarship program helps do this." William Kelly Golden Educational Assistance Awards amounting to $1,000 per year or $4,000 over four years if criteria are met were made to Miranda Jo McKay of McGill, Leslie Arlene Oakden of Fallon, Tanya Marie Balaam of Yerington and Cody Sam Bengoa of Winnemucca. William Kelly Golden Memorial Scholarships of $500 per year went to Jessica R. Montana of Fallon, Michelle D. Bogo-ger of Tonopah, and Jessica Marie Bellander of Ely. The James Rolph III Memorial Scholarship of $500 was awarded to Julie Carmen Work of Portola, Calif.

The Cox-Herndon Memorial Award of $500 went to Jessen Mortensen of Wadsworth. NAF $500 grants were made to Tiffany D- Cas-cio of Henderson, Greta Laurel Gardner of Ruby Valley, and Marlow Jeof-frey Dahl of Deeth. The Harry A. Forbush Memorial Scholarship of $500 went to Cory S. Nunes of Fallon and the Arvin Boerlin Memorial grant of $250.00 was awarded to Me-linda Ann Sandstrom of Cedarville, Calif.

Elko County award winners included Dahl and Gardner, both NAF $500 grant recipients. Marlow Dahl, son of M. Jeoffry and Karen Dahl of Starr Valley, is a 1995 graduate of Wells High School. He is both an FFA and a 4-H member, was a three sport letterman in high school and a member of the Honor Society. He is a freshman at Occidental College, Los Angeles, majoring in Agribusiness with an emphasis in International Trade.

Greta Gardner, a freshman at Washington State University also majoring in agribusiness, is the daughter of Jack and Brenda Gardner of Ruby Valley. She is a 1995 graduate of Elko High School where she was a member of FFA, 4-H, cross country and the honor society. She was also active in the Polled Hereford and Hereford Associations. Jessica Montana, a William Golden Memorial $500 awardee, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs.

Steven Montana of Fallon and a 1995 graduate of Churchill County High. While in high school, Montana competed in athletics including varsity basketball, soccer and swimming and was a member of the National Honor Society. She is currently attending the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa, majoring in environmental science. The Harry A. Forbush Memorial $500 award recipient is Cory Nunes, son of Mr.

and Mrs. Stephen Nunes of Fallon and a 1995 graduate of Churchill County High. He is a freshman student at Santa Rosa Junior College majoring in agricultural business and law. SEA to Shining Sea, a national seminar hosted by the Greater Pacific Region of the Embroiderers' Guild of America, is scheduled Sept. 1-6 at the San Francisco Marriott Hotel. Class sizes are limited to assure individual instruction, so participants are encouraged to join the organization now. Over 900 people will participate in over 50 needlework classes taught by 42 national and overseas experts. Information on the classes will be detailed in the March brochure sent only to EGA members and those interested may pre-register as soon as they join a chapter.

Northern Nevadans STEPHEN Jones, a U.S. Navy petty officer, has returned to San Diego after completing a six-month overseas deployment aboard the guided missile destroyer USS John Paul Jones, which included duty in the Persian Gulf near Iraq. Jones is one of 353 Sailors aboard the ship who completed the more than voyage.

Jones' ship was part of the USS Abraham Lincoln Battle Group which included more than 80 tactical aircraft, and ships and submarines armed with Tomahawk cruise missiles. While in the Persian Gulf, Jones and fellow sailors helped enforce the international embargo against Iraq. Jones' ship questioned and boarded ships suspected of smuggling prohibited materials to and from Iraq. In the Pacific Ocean, Jones' ship safely recovered two air crewmen who had ejected from a jet fighter that had crashed 800 miles west of Guam. Jones also participated in several training evolutions including antisubmarine and mine warfare exercises.

Jones' ship even fired three exercise torpedoes. Jones and fellow shipmates also visited Bahrain, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Oman, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates. Jones is the son of Paul and Judy Jones of Elko. were also planned. Terry Merkley asked if the club would like to help buy or make table cloths for the Jiggs Community Hall and Maggie Club.

It was tabled until we can find out more about what is needed. Sydney Merkley, Jenny and Michelle Merkley and Michelle Rowley hauled trash from the Jiggs Fire Station last week with the help of Terry and Kenny Merkley as part of our community service. A new member to our club, David Wiggins, was introduced and welcomed. The meeting was then adjourned and cookies and punch were served. Members present were Joe, Jenny and Michelle Merkley, Kara Nelson, Andrea Paris, Aintxane Menaka, Sydney Merkley, Michelle Rowley, David Wiggins, Cody Morse and Katie Klein.

Open poetry contest The National Library of Poetry has announced that $24,000 in prizes will be awarded this year to over 250 poets in the North American Open Poetry Contest. The entry deadline is Dec. 31 and there is no entry fee. Poets will also have an opportunity to have their work published, according to a press release. Those interested should sent one original poem on any subject to the National Library of Poetry, 11419 Cronridge P.O.

Box 704-1986, Ow-ings Mills, Md. 21117. The poem should be no more than 20 lines and the poet's name and address should appear on the top of the page. Entries must be postmarked by Dec. 31.

Dec. 10 at Great Basin College Theater located at 1500 College Parkway. Local musicians will present a program that includes both traditional and modern Topaz Lake girl Miiis 4-H award A solid background in raising and caring for sheep earned a Topaz Lake girl this year's March Landa 4-H Achievement Award. The $500 memorial grant administered and given by the Nevada Agricultural Foundation (NAF) will help the 4-H'er represent the state at the Western Regional 4-H Leadership Congress in Salt Lake City. Kellie Chichester is a 15-year-old member of the Smith Valley, Nevada 4-H Club and was selected for the award based on her sheep project She is a sophom*ore at Coleville High School and the daughter of Les and Terri Chichester.

She has been in 4-H for seven years. "We are especially pleased that this year's recipient has such credentials and achievement in her 4-H sheep project," said Jeanette Landa of Reno. The award honors her late husband, March Landa, who was involved for years in the sheep industry in Washoe County. Chichester lives on a ranch near Topaz where her family raises cattle and sheep. She raised home grown lambs for 4-H market projects and has conducted a strong sheep breeding project.

She has also shown lambs and heifers in numerous livestock shows. Mound Valley 4-H Club By Trent Whitaker The Mound Valley 4-H Club held its achievement night Oct. 22 at Jiggs Community Hall. A potluck dinner was served and our new officers were introduced. They are Becky Lee, president; Joe Merkley, vice president; Kara Nelson, secretary, Aintxane Menaka, treasurer; and Trent Whitaker, reporter.

Several members gave reports on projects we had throughout the year. Mrs. Norman Nichols was given a plaque honoring her late husband, Norman Nichols. A slide show was given by Ron Torrel showing all of this year's 4-H events. Special guests were Mrs.

Norman Nichols and Ron and Rusty Torrell. The Mound Valley 4-H Club held its November meeting Nov. 15 at Andrea Paris' house. The meeting was called to order by Vice President Joe Merkley. The November party at the Manor was discussed and it was decided to schedule it Nov.

30 and to have a Christmas theme. It was also decided to have a half and half raffle at the Maggie Club Turkey Shoot Nov. 19. Cody Morse talked about a community service project for this spring and a baked food sale and raffle Dec. 1 Dec.
